The Ore Valley Visual Audit

May - December 2006

Exhibition: The Bridge Community Centre, 361 Priory Road, Hastings TN34 3NW

19 January - 2 February 2007

Groups of pupils from Hillcrest Secondary School, Hastings, worked with photographer Danny Wilson to produce a 'visual audit' of three Ore Valley housing estates that are currently undergoing regeneration.

The students, who live on these estates, used photography and text which was generated via site visits and interviews with residents. This was in order to express the experience of living in Ore Valley.

The photographs and other work produced by the students made up an 'audit' of current conditions. This will inform the area's regeneration programme through exhibitions at community venues, and by dissemination to regeneration agencies. The underlying educational aims of the project were the development of creative expression in a wide range of media and a raised understanding of the designed physical environment and its effect on the community.

Danny Wilson is a photographer and curator who lives and works in Brighton. Since graduating from the University of Brighton in 1995, Danny has been involved in a number of exhibitions as both an artist and curator. These include Relative Values, Photographers Gallery, 1994; Inspirit, Maidstone Museum & Art Gallery, 1997; Intermission, a site specific exhibition at Brighton Little Theatre, 2003; two exhibitions for Architecture Week at the Permanent Gallery in Brighton: Outside In, June 2004 and Fragments, June 2005. His most recent exhibition was we found a place…then drifted apart, Otter Gallery, University of Chichester, 2006.

Danny has extensive experience of working with young people which includes leading and coordinating the Shutterspeed photography youth project in conjunction with Fabrica Gallery and Coalition 4 Youth. He has also worked with the Young Carers project, Woodingdean Youth Centre, Bhasvic sixth form pupils and youth arts organisation Freestyle.

The Ore Valley Visual Audit, managed by BPB, was supported by the Ore Valley Regeneration Forum through the Regeneration Unit at Hastings Borough Council and by Creative Partnerships. Part of Hillcrest School’s extended school programme that aims to link the school with local partners to create a learning community.
