Alfredo Jaar is an artist, architect and filmmaker based in New York. Jaar’s projects, such as The Rwanda Project (1994-1998), use photography, text, lightbox, moving image and installation in various forms to challenge the mainstream media response to collective trauma. Jaar’s major solo exhibitions include Macro, Museo Arte
Contemporanea Roma; Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and MAMCO, Geneva. He has been included in various biennales, including Venice, São Paulo, Johannesburg,
Sydney, Istanbul and Kwangju as well
as Documenta in Kassel. In 1985 Jaar received a Guggenheim Fellowship and in 2000 was made a Mac Arthur fellow. His new installation The Sound of Silence (2006) receives its UK premiere at Brighton Photo Biennial 2006.
