b. 1971 Constantine, Algeria
Adel Abdessemed is an artist working with a variety of media, currently based in Berlin. Between 1990-1994 he studied at the Fine Arts High School, Alger, followed by the Fine Arts National School, Lyon
(1994-1998). Abdessemed works across video, animation, performance and sculptural installation. His practice can take on the grandiosity of the memento mori, as seen in his monumentally skeletal piece Habibi (2003), or the subtle rhythms of hybrid animated forms as in his video projection God is Design (2005), presented at Brighton Photo Biennial 2006. He participated in the 2001 P.S.1 International Studio Program in New York, where he also exhibited in Uniforms: Order and Disorder (2001). Solo exhibitions include FRAC Champagne Ardenne (2004). In 2006 Abdessemed was included in Notre Histoire, an exhibition of emerging French artists at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
